I have an 02 coupe A4 36,7000 miles and never had any issues till now...

I'm just driving it like normal last Fri. night and gave it a little punch at a light, got it up to 45 mph and it didn't shift into 2nd, just hit the rev limiter.

Took it on the highway to see what I could see, found out, 1st gear is good, 2nd gear is gone, 3rd is still there and 4th is gone??? just like that out of the blue... no codes, no nothing. Later found out reverse is gone too. It's made a grinding whining noise at slower speeds (35-40 mph) and sounded like I was dragging the tranni, or rocks were grinding up in there or something??

I took it into the dealership, it's still under GM Certified warranty 39,000/39 months, so that's good, but I'm heart broke. I expected it to last and hold up, I don't drive it that hard, bought it with 22,000 miles and in good shape.

Does this happen on young vettes?? I'm thinking I need something relieable to drive, can I trust it anymore?? It's been my dream since I was young, I've saved and now I have it, but I just don't know now?

Sorry to hear about your luck and I would say yes, it should have lasted longer. However like all mechnical things, they can break at any time. [Banging Head]

All I can say is you are not the first on this site and possibly the previous owner beat on it.

I've rarely heard of problems with the A4, but they do happen. At least you are still under warranty.

And you might want to consider an extended warranty.

Yea, it sucks. Thanks guys.

Someone mentioned if the PCM gets wet, it could cause something like this, but I dont' know??

I could hear grinding, and whining and just bad stuff from what it sounded. This is the reason I even bought my vette cause the tranni on my taurus went out, but that was after 130,000 miles.

I'll keep you guys updated, hopefully it's something else, if not, at least I'm getting a new tranni out of it...I'm about to call the dealership.

forgot to mention, I checked the codes after this happened, and nothing showed, except the ones I previously posted here, but they were all "H"'s and had to do with the ignition and battery??

Would tranni failures show up with codes??

There might be codes for the tranny, but I don't know if it will always leave codes as I'm not too familiar with automatics.

Also, a code goes into History as soon as you turn the key off. So, a code indicating a problem can be in history if it isn't active at the moment you check the codes.

sorry to hear bout your tranny
Dont lose your cool ....Its under warranty
my 87 IROC tranny took a dump at 120K - no warning
I had it rebuilt with Corvette servo / parts etc
that was $980 3 years ago outa MY pocket
the upside is no more problems & it runs much stronger now. We may be talkin apples & oranges here but if GM pays the tab, your biggest loss is bein' without it for a spell..
Good luck !
Mike

Could be anything from major failure to a linkage issue. Get it to the dealer. Good luck

Thanks Mike,

Talk about being devestated, out of the blue too.
I'm still waiting to hear from the dealership.

I'm missing her bad, they gave me a Chevy Colorado, 4 banger midsized truch....WOE!!! nothing at my finger tips, no high tech gizmoes, and worse of all, NO PUNCH....ha

As long as they take care of my C5 I'll be happy.

I see you got your 02 Z06 posted on your signiture. Nice.

JUST GOT THE CALL....

The dealership said it's the reaction shell cover and it's cracked....

Will that effect anything else long term?? gears, other tranni parts??

They said everything else looked fine. What would cause this? I'm pretty easy on it most the time, just cruise it.

No Josh, I have no useful or helpful information here only jabs and fun poking. Sorry, if I got your texan rib. There is no info that reaction shells crack when beaten. You are lucky the car is under warranty. Probably was the prior owner
