I knew I was gonna learn something here! I've been having the same problem w/my '98. Strangly enough it didn't seem to happen when I filled up at Chevron, but it always seemed to happen when I filled up at Gate. Think I'll get some of the Techron next time at Chevron. Thanks!

Isn't Naphtha the active ingredient in most fuel additives ? I buy it at the paint store for 10 bucks a GALLON and use 8 ounces every so often. Mileage increases and so does performance. JMHO

I've had this problem too. The gauge would crash to zero and needed a turn off/turn on ignition sequence to clear it.
After the new software went in (the column lock recall), it has still happened occasionally, but now it recovers all on its own after a few miles. Of late, it has not happened at all, and I have been using gas from everywhere.
Bottom line? Who knows. I have used Techron recently (last time about 6 months ago), so it may be that. I get it in 4 packs from Costco, at a good discount from regular retail as I recall.

I'm with rogerd, get it at Costco if you have a membership or know somebody that has one. I'm pretty sure the other clubs might have a similiar price. a 4 pack for about $8-$9. When I 1st started having the problem, I used a bottle once a week for a month. I cut back to one bottle a month after that.
I believe it has to do with a software/programming issue. If not, most of us wouldn't be having the same problem at the same levels of fuel in the tank. I had them replace mines in 2000 as part of the recall, I left the dealership with complete new sending units after watching the mechanic remove the orginals. Same problem started a couple days later. Stumbled on to a discussion about the problem & I've been using Techron ever since. GM says that it's a build up of chemicals from the gas used.

When you refer to "top quality fuel", are you referring to the octane level, or a specific brand, such as Shell or BP, etc.?

I use Amoco 93 octane and have not had a problem. Some call Amoco Premium, white gas, because it is a clean clear looking gas. Best gas IMO.

I agree with Norm about Amoco just hard to find. I really hate the ethanol stuff mileage and performance go in the toilet with that crap. Techtron every so often and no loney fuel gauge issues for me.

also never "over fill" the tank, stop when the automatic shutoff on the gasoline pump shut of the pump.do not try to "squeeze" any more fuel into the tank. this has worked for me with a 97,99,02 and now my 05 as far as the fuel gauge acting up. JMHO

Techron is available at Walmart for 6 bucks. It is usually located near the STP products.

My 1997 C5 A4 with 25K miles is now getting the "Low Fuel" and gas gauge needle dropping on a full tank to Empty. I've been using Chevron and Texaco premium since all of their gasoline has Techron in it. DIC shows codes of P0461, P1431, P1571. I'll look them up at home since I've got all four service manuals for the 1997 C5. Looks like it's time for me to try either the bottle of Techron or the GM Fuel Treatment PLUS.

I've read the issue is because the C5 has two gas tanks there are two fuel readers and when they don't agree due to a bad connection and/or failure of one sensor, it confuses the computer and the result is to show no fuel. I switched from BP to 76 (and a sometimes Shell) and my gas gauge issue seems to have gone away. Have yet to try a fuel treatment of any kind. Probably wouldn't hurt with 66K miles.

Hey guys, are you talking about Chevron w/ "techron" fuel, or is there an actual fuel system cleaner by a similar name? I've looked at a couple of auto parts stores and haven't seen aynthing...
My C5 is having some fuel gauge issues, so I put in some fuel system cleaner (forgot which brand) and have yet to see if it fixes the issue (only 150 miles since putting it in).
