I have a strange noise coming from under the hood. Here is what I have found/learned thus far: I looked into the possibility of it being a valvetrain noise, but I couldn't pinpoint it to any one cylinder or cylinder head, I checked the torque on the header bolts and got some movement on the right-bank flange, the noise is not evident when you first start the car but it comes in pretty soon after it warms up and then sounds pretty bad when you drive it, I pulled the breather cap off and found a little bit of sludge around the edge (it is time for an oil change), I looked under the car and it appears as though the collector-to-cat joint is not made up properly.
I'm a little stumped as to which direction to go. I don't have the facilities to get the car off the ground myself, and I don't want to spend a small fortune for someone else to go chasing down the wrong problem. I think that the symptoms point to an exhaust leak (or maybe a few leaks).
Has anyone else had this problem, or heard of this problem?? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. PM me if you have to.
The engine is a built 6.0L, full exhaust w/long tubes. I've only had the car for about 4 months. Until now I was a Mustang/Cobra guy, so I am not altogether familiar with GM/Vette engines. Thanks.

So, as it turns out, it looks to be more of an exhaust leak. Case in point: I checked the clamp around the collector-to-cat joint and it was loose. Tightened it up and the noise mostly went away. So now it is on to the other three clamps, and then we'll see what happens. jrose - you might be right in that there is some piston slap, but it is only evident when you shut the engine off...

Welcome to the corvette forum I suggest you invest in some ramps to get your car in the air. They pay for themselves quickly. Great car you bought. I hope the noise is just lose clamps. Let us know what you find.

Good advice. I'd invest in a set of service manuals too. Welcome to the forum.
