My wife must have hit something and not told me......my 99' vette with 98k was cruising along yesterday, and this scraping sound started.. I crawled out to look and saw the middle spoiler was hanging by 1 side, so I ripped the rest off and drove on. no issues with heating or anything. DO I HAVE TO HAVE THIS ON THE CAR? Or, can i drive it without it. I'm sure if I put another one on......the wife will rip it off too. Any suggestions? thank you.

It does help air get to the radiator, but many have removed them without issues. Just take a peek up there every so often to make sure your radiator isn't covered with debris. However, all three pieces can be replaced for under $100, so I'd replace it and make the wife "work it off" Posts: 1528 | From: North Augusta, SC | Registered: Apr 2003

From experience with another car, I found that without the air dam over heating occurred mainly at freeway speeds of longer duration. Around town didn't seem to have much of an effect.

HAHAHAHAHA CHEWY!! Make MY WIFE WORK IT OFF?? She's over the hill according to her. I just fix cars for the fun of it now. I found a set on ebay for 62. bucks. The company says it's better than the aftermarket. I haven't bought it yet, but I am considering it. I'll fix it when I need a break....from my wonderful wife : )

The center section is the most money, the ends are not. I replaced both of my ends because of pits and the previous owner hit too many parking blocks and the rubber was curved, I think I paid under $15 a piece too.

Ya, it's the center section; however, I'll replace all 3. For 62. dollars it's not a big deal. Just wanted to make sure I didn't have to do it within the next 2 hours, and not 2 week. Anyone ever done this? 6 bolts? That's all there is to it? Thanks. Dave

The center is easier to get off time wise then the two corners. The corner pieces have 4 or 5 bolts each to get them off. You may also want to back the bolts with larger flat washers to give the rubber more support too if your already do not have something like that.
Not a hard job to do at all just some time.

We have 2 vettes. I have a really nice 95' coupe, and we drive HER 99' convert all over. It has the most miles. She pays for it, and I fix it. Works out well for both of us, and she doesn't touch my car unless she has too. Besides, she's a good cook LOL

Got the spoiler put on. 7mm socket for the ends, and a 10mm on the center piece. Pretty simple job with a 1/4 air rachet. I also looked up in the radiator....lots of dirt up there so I blew it off with my air hose. Dirt flew out of the area for quite a while, so I guess it was time clean it. Also put clean fresh Mobil 1 in the car and a new filter. 100k miles later the 99' convert still runs like a top. It's ready for the little woman to rip something else off now : ) Thanks all. It is amazin how much junk the vette sucks up into the rad. A tip for consideration clean out the drain nipples for the cowl or you will wind up replacing the wiper board. Talk about amazin the amount of crap stuck in those nipples. Com on now dont be afraid to wrap your mits around those nipples.
