Got a newby question for the group. I bought a 2000 coupe with 25,000 miles on it. I have put on about 3,000 miles since I bought the car. I pulled the air filter today and it was the dirtiest I have ever seen! The car is way to clean (no dirt in the crooks and crannies) to suggest that it was originally driven in a dirty area. So here is my question: Since the Corvette takes in air from under the car, does the air filter dirty up faster than other types of cars? Also, mine has a K&N filter. Did Chevy put K&N filters on the vette?

Welcome to the forum [Cheers]

K&N isn't standard. You need a special cleaning solvent and oil to maintain it. I don't think the Vette's filter gets any dirtier than other cars.

Hey leftyvette, welcome to the forum. I have the same K&N you do. I believe they tell you in the instructions to clean the filter every 50,000 miles. As BruceF said, there is a cleaning kit you can buy at an automotive store. Just follow the instructions to to clean the filter. It's so easy even I can do it. Have fun with your Vette.

Thanks for the welcome! I have already learned a lot about Vettes from this site. I have the cleaning and recharging kit since I have a K&N on my PT Cruiser Convertible. I was just curious as to why my filter was soooo dirty after less than 30,000 miles. Again, thanks for the great discussions!

Welcome to the forum. That sounds pretty dirty to me for a lower mileage car.

Welcome! [Save the Wave!]

If the filter is over oiled then it will allow dirt to stick to it quicker. When I re-oil mine, I wrap it in a rag to soak up any extra oil.

More than likely the previous owner never cleaned it. Welcome to the forum!

I'd go with the previous owner didn't clean it and probable over oiled it. Around here the crap from the road sand in the winter can accumulate pretty fast.
