Nissan GT-R posts 7:29 lap time at Nürburgring
By GREG MIGLIORE
Nissan GT-R
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As if fans of the GT-R needed another reason to drool, Nissan now seems intent on proving the supercar's prowess on the track.

In mid-April, its chief test driver pushed a production-spec GT-R to a lap time of seven minutes, 29 seconds at the Nürburgring--nine seconds faster than the car's previous best time that was recorded last year in damp conditions.

The car was piloted by Toshio Suzuki and had standard Japanese tires.

Nissan says the performance ranks among the best by a production car in the Nürburgring's 81-year history and had made it a goal to get a lap time of less than seven minutes, 30 seconds at the storied 12.9-mile German track.

"Below seven minutes, 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, the GT-R's chief engineer, in a statement.

A car produced by a British company, Radical Sportscars, claims to hold the record for road cars at the Nürburgring with a lap time of 6:55, set in September 2005. To generate publicity, numerous automakers test their cars at the track, though under different conditions, which makes comparisons tough.

The GT-R is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 rated at 480 hp and has a top speed of 193 mph. It goes on sale in the United States and Canada in July and will roll out to other markets over the next year. It bowed in Japan in December 2007.

I was waiting to see if anybody would mention this car. Road and Track magazine did a comparison test between the GTR, 911 Turbo, and Z06 and the GTR absolutely decimated the competition on the race track (over 5 secs on a relatively short lap!). We can't say the Vette is the best value for the money, either, because the Vette lists for more money than the Nissan.

What makes me want to see another comparison is the fact that Steve Millen was doing the driving and not only is most of his race experience in AWD cars, but he is on Nissan's payroll as well, which could possibly influence how much effort he put into the other cars.
