I'm so perplexed about this.

On the one hand, the design characteristics of the screen are so poor for many different reasons, that you should improve airflow by removing it. On the other hand, the concept behind what the screen was intended to do is extremely sound in theory. It was just so darn poorly executed that I have a hard time beating you about the head and face for removing it.

Aaaaah - oh - all right... go ahead and take it out. This is a classic example of 6 bad apples, or a half dozen bad apples. Either way, you've got a stomachache. It's all the same to me. What the heck - you only live once - right. I'm working on solving this screen design problem now, but it is turning into a real pain in the %$#$ because I have to try and relocate elements that were not designed the way I need them to be.

GM could have easily added a 0.11594202898 percent increase in horsepower by reordering the position of the intake elements: filer, MAF sensor, and air duct, and then designing an effecient ducting chamber that exhibits better control of the air flow prior to reaching the electronics.

How this one escaped the GM engineers is totally beyond me. Your guess is as good as mine. But, we can all use the extra 40 ponies.

Not that you are going to get 40 ponies by simply removing the screen, mind you.

P.S. I do not use their version of the screen.

the 2002 LS-6(ZO-6) does not have the screen, but i am wondering if the MAF has a different calibration. i have removed the screen from my 97 and 99 with good results.

This is just a guess on my part...but considering that local tuners Cartek insists on using stock mafs with screens on there 420 REAR WHEEL HP tuner cars since they put a dyno and pcm edit capability in...

I'd go with leaving the stock maf alone..

I agree, you should just leave it alone. The increase in power will not be that much of a difference, and GM made them that way for a reason. But no one can tell someone what to do with their car, so it is up to the owners.

The screen serves nopurpose in the Corvette. It does in the F body where the intake "turns" prior to the connection to the MAF. In this case it seves to straighten the airflow. In the Corvette there is no real need.

Motorman,

In a steady flow, in which all properties are functions of position ONLY and not of time, a particle of fluid travels a path whose tangent at any point is in the direction of the velocity at that point. Such a line is called a "streamline" and its simple equation is:

dr/ds ~ V/v

(where, r being the vector radius from a fixed point of origin and s being the distance along the line measured from a fixed point therein.)

This streamline is said to have "continuity". Prior to the MAF Sensor Screen, there is precious little continuity in the main body stream. Thus, GM put it there to provide mechanical continuity to the streamline. Several hundred of these streamlines get created with the GM MAF Sensor Screen prior to impacting the MAF Sensor.

That's the short version technical explanation for why it is there in the first place.

i know it is there to create lamaler(spelling) flow over the wires and you need it on any car that the air makes a turn before it gets to the MAF.thank god the C-5 air intake is straight from the air filter to the MAF. people have removed the screen from other GM car and had them run like s--t. thanks R BONUS for your personal experience

Does the Z06 have a screen. I don't think so, or is it just the '02 that does not have it.
