Has anyone had this problem? It's sucked since the day I got the car.
Dealer says he can't hear any static, but he just listened in the parking lot.
Doesn't matter if the car is running or not and varis as to how bad it is.
AM is great and no noise playing CD's from the changer or dash.
Had the same problem with my old cassette head unit.
So I don't think it's the radio. crazy
I checked all the antenna connections by the drivers seat and the one by the rear window, both under the trim, and the plug at the windshield (which is my 3rd) but everything looks good. [Computer]

Yes, I have/had the same problem. Once in a while, I get static fade in and out. I took it to the dealer. We drove around a bit. He said that it is a know problem and that the reason for it is because the antenna is not grounded well from gm. He added a few washers to the assembly and it helped a bit, but its not perfect. I did not actually see him do it though.

Hi there,
Well, there is a preliminary service document for poor AM reception, in SI2000.
I would say that they should check on this, and see what is up.
I would also compare to a like vehicle, to see if the reception is the same.

I also have weak FM reception. In other cars, I am amazed at how many stations my city actually has that I never knew about

My 2001 gets terrible fm rececption. I drive a cheap Hyundai everyday, but the radio picks up everything. Glad I put the Corsa exhaust on. Who needs a radio anyway! laugh

All Corvettes are notorious for poor FM reception. It's a two part problem.

#1 Fiberglass body, which you can't do anything about.

#2 Power antenna, which belongs only on Cadillac's and Lincoln's.

I use a stainless steel whip antenna which has a quick disconnect at the base. It doubles the signal strength capture ratio and it also eliminates that annoying up and down in motion noise.

As some of you know, my other hobby is aviation, and I've spent some time in WW II airplanes that are made of a welded metal frame, some metal panels, and a lot of wood and fabric.

These have notorioulsy bad radio performance, even with the most modern aviation radios you can put in. The problem is no ground plane (not enough metal where it counts).

Sounds like a Corvette. Here's something to try, if you want to experiment.

Avionics shops (at the local airport), can set you up with a sheet of metal mesh or very thin metal panel (think window screen, but metal). The bigger the better. Use that to ground the antenna (you can put the mesh underneath the rear mat on a temporary basis), and see if it helps. This would at least isolate the problem.

Hope this helps.

I actually don't have a problem with fm reception. Actually, I really don't know since I don't listen to the radio very much.

I've got fair to good reception with the windshield antenna. I can pick up NH and RI stations when I am in the "middle" (route 2) of MA. I agree that it needs a nice power boost. But with my B&B's who needs a radio anyway?

Got the solution...XM radio...its satellite radio which gives you like 100 channels all your regular channels which you can stil get from across the country then like 40 channels of commercial free music... cheers

This is also where the fiberglass body comes in handy because it doesn't block the radio waves....do you can mount the antenna anywhere in the car and your recption will be solid, never have a problem [Rotate]
