I have the common problem of the fuel gauge dropping off to zero after driving a while. I did a search on the problem and have added a bottle of tecron (20 gal size) to the tank. I had about 3/4 of a tank of fuel at the time I added it.I'll add another bottle when the level gets near empty and then refill. My questions are , will the tecron really fix the problem, or will I need to replace the sender? how big of a job is the replacement/ I have done sending units and pumps on other GM vehicles like S10,s and pickups. I see the vette has two tanks, where is the sending unit located and how tough is the tank to get to? 97 Coupe that has been garaged and rarely driven (11K!!) I plan to change that! Thanks-Chuck.

CC597, don't know about the Tecron, but the dropping fuel gauge seems to be a problem that alot of us have or have had. When I purchased my 98 it had been lowered by the previous owner and it seemed that the fuel gauge would drop off every other time I took it out. I raised it back to approx. factory levels and have not had a problem since. Go figure. I know this doesn't cure your problem, but something to think about. savewave

Give the techtron a chance, it works for me. this is a recurring issue and doesn't require the sending unit to be changed. Just get use to adding techtron every couple of tanks.

I've had the same experience as leadfoot, but add techtron every 90 days vs every couple tanks.

You can get it anywhere it is in most of the fuel injector cleaners. I get mine at Pep Boys.

I had the same problem, my gauge would read only 3/4 of a tank at full then go to empty. I had to do the techron add 3 times then it finally worked.

I get Tecron at Chevron stations. I havent seen it anywhere else. The stuff is not cheap but does seem to work exactly like everyone says. I think Chevron gas also has it as an additive but that isnt enough for my car, still need the bottle.

Use this new additive by GM which has a new ingredient to eliminate the fuel gauge problem (make sure you get the new stuff, which has the "PLUS" on the label):

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS, Fuel Sending Unit Corrosion and Fuel System Deposits
2006 and Prior All GM Cars and Trucks

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS, P/N 88861011 (for U.S. ACDelco®, use 88861013) (in Canada, 88861012), is now available.

Added Benefits and Uses
The PLUS portion of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS is the addition of a filmer additive that, when used regularly, can protect fuel system sending units from the corrosive effects of certain sulfur contaminants found in some of today's gasoline.

Sulfur contamination can disrupt electrical continuity of certain fuel sending units and lead to erratic or false fuel gauge readings. With scheduled usage, GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS protects against the effects of harmful sulfurs in gasoline.

You Get Four Benefits
One bottle of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS added to the fuel tank at each oil change:

• Cleans -- Sulfur corrosion from fuel gauge sending units.

• Prevents -- Harmful sulfur components from attacking sensitive fuel system electronics.

• Protects -- By coating metallic surfaces of the fuel system.

• Removes -- Engine deposits left from use of poor quality fuels.

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS will replace the original GM Fuel System Treatment, P/N 12345104 (in Canada, 89020804). The original formula may still be available for a limited time, and provides the excellent Fuel System Cleaning aspects of the new product without the filmer.

NOTE: The interval for using this cleaner is NOW 3000 miles, NOT 1500.

The GM list price for this stuff is $22.53 eek

And they want us to use a bottle once every 3000 miles, I don't think so cheers

I don't see how lowering the vehicle would cause a fuel gauge problem. My car has been lowered as far as it can be on stock bolts and I don't have a fuel gauge problem

I have had this problem since i bought my 97 in 10/04. I finally got around to adding the Techron last weekend when the tank was almost empty (Saturday). I put it in and filled the tank. the fuel guage held the entire weekend, I emptied the tank by Monday. It has a 1/2 tank now and no drop off.

How about just using the top tier gasoline?

Sandman,

I always use Shell premium but I still had problems with the fuel gauge dropping to empty or reading full after 100 - 150 miles of driving. The system was repaired under the new car warranty and later by Mr. Goodwrench (again) under my GMPP. I purchased the car new.

I used the new GM Fuel System "Plus" cleaner and it eliminated the fuel gauge staying on full for an extended period of time.

The list price is high - but who pays list price?
