Have an '00 C5, a fellow Vette driver told me of an issue of a wobbling Harmonic Balancer. Noticed mine wobbles a bit at idle, but disappears at higher RPM. Is this ok? Should it be replaced? Looking for someone that knows more than me on this!! smile

It is a known problem due to the way they made em.
They all wobble some it is when it starts to travel(begins to move forward) that you get issues. It may never need attention but if it travels too far you got big issues.
Do you got a mechanic you trust? Ask him to put a strobe light on it so he can see if it is in need of attention. A real pain in the ass job but not as bad as what can result from it walkin out on you. Welcome to the forum and post up more frequently we can use the new views and ideas hammer

My brother has a C-6 that has an issue with
the harmonic balancer wobble , but like Leadfoot
said it's not a problem until it starts to
move forward. That was also confirmed by the
GM dealer. You sure want to stay dilligent
about checking it cause it'll cause major
headaches if it comes loose.

Welcome to the forum, and don't be a stranger.

Great! That's exactly what my mechanic/friend told me. Just wanted some other opinions! I make sure I keep an eye on it! Appreciate the info. Great Site here and I'm sure i'll be back soon! I guess this issue is not great enough to justify that 2010 Grand Sport to the wife! Damit! cheers

The harmonic balancer is the big pulley in front of the engine that turns all of the belts (sorry, just covering all the bases). In vettes they aren't a solid piece of metal, they're made of an inner piece that attaches to the engine and an outer piece that turns the belt. There's a hard rubber insert between the two pieces. Nothing holds the assembly together other than friction. When new, many appear to have a slight wobble, that is normal. Over time the pieces can come loose (not normal) and the outer ring can walk forward on the crankshaft. I've read about a few that have suddenly just popped off, but most will start to make noise and give enough warning to get them fixed before something really bad happens.

The bolt that holds the entire thing on the engine can also come loose, but the rings separating seems to be more common on C5's.

Hi new to this forum but I was searching for info on harmonic balancers and found it here. I have a 97 with 130,000 miles and was preping it for the spring. I heard a ticking noise and it lead me to the a/c belt. It had chuncks out of it so I replaced it. Started it back up, took a look and the new belt had climbed up over the pulley. After more inspection, so had the serpetine belt climbed out of pulley. I removed the belts and took a straight edge, laid it across the front of the harmonic balancer and found it to be more than a 1/4 in moved forward. Yup I was one of the lucky ones to have a slipped harmonic balancer. So I am waiting for parts to replace it. Reason for putting this in the forum is to let people know a quick tip. " When ever you change belts just check pulley alignment with a straight edge. Quick and easy from under the car" Hope this helps

Love this forum, I'm a daily reader.
