Next Chevrolet Corvette to get 440-hp 5.5-liter small-block V8

According to Motor Trend, which is citing unnamed sources within General Motors, the next-generation Corvette will come with a brand-new engine. Despite rumors to the contrary, it seems that Chevrolet's halo vehicle will continue using its trademark V8 engine and not a V6. Still, the C7's powerplant will be downsized from its current 6.2 or 7.0 liters.

It's likely that this new engine will be the first application of GM's next-gen small block family, and we'd expect it to sport direct injection, E85 capability and a new combustion system design. One thing not to expect, though: overhead cams. You can bank on the fact that The General will stick to its tried-and-true overhead valve design, which serves to lower manufacturing costs and allows for comparatively small overall engine dimensions.

All of these technologies should make the venerable V8 more fuel efficient and cleaner, but also sufficiently powerful to uphold its sportscar heritage. In fact, Motor Trend reports that the C7's V8 will displace 5.5 liters while hammering out 440 horsepower. Though that significantly smaller in displacement, the power figure would actually be up from the current 430 ponies. We can hardly wait... but we'll have to anyway. We don't expect the next Corvette to bow before 2012 at the earliest.

twenty more posts and I'm at an even 10,000 posts so tonights the night!

I would have hoped for more power from the new 5.5 liter v8 but all told...440 hp is an early estimate..

I want DSG and a 3100 lb curb weight..

Houston...we have a winner!

440 hp is more than most people will ever use. At what point do you run into too much hp? If that's possible.
Thanks for the info J.B. thumbsup

I have to suggest that it would have been better if GM were to hit 475hp out of the 5.5 liter..

I think its doable and if they can drop the vehicle weight by a hundred or so pounds....

It would be cool....

Add in launch control and DSG and a price tag not too far above todays MSRP we'll be good to go for maintaining the worlds best sports car for another decade at least..

Dream list of what I'd like to see....(a little more than 440 if at all possible wouldn't be terrible..)

I did get to see the car picture this morning and I'd have to say that I like it. The one I saw was a bright orange color.

Some bad news today...

Over heard some rumors that suggest a 4.7 liter v8 making an even 400hp...

Being serveral hundred pounds lighter....and a few inches shorter front and rear overhangs sounds good...but an engine with less than 5.5 liters sounds a bit weak....

Even with 400hp...the torque numbers gotta be dropping big time...so I'm not too enthusiastic..

I hope GM doesn't drop below the 5.5 liter engine displacement.

Corvette owners dig high hp numbers but also crave low end torque..

4.7 is kind of small for big low end torque numbers..

Sure the cam being placed higher up in the block allowing for shorter pushrods and higher rpm capability.....Still a minimum of 5 liters would make more sense...

IMO and of course...Happy 4th of July!

hmmm.....

If the C7 comes out in '12, they should have all of the new model bugs figured out by '14, which would be about when my '07 hits 100k.

Somebody reserve me an allocation devilgrin

I 'd say thats a good plan.. I would let you know I bought the first year cadillac AWD 3.6 liter FE2 CTS...In fact it was the first week they were delivering cars...and I have not had a stitch of trouble with it.

I am very proud to have such an early production vehicle and absolutely no issues what so ever over the past 2 or 3 years..

That said...getting 100k miles out of your present corvette makes a lot of sense..

Its a great car!

and usually gm releases some great addition to every car they make about a year or two into production..as long as the government doesn't regulate the guts out of the vehicle..

Which is my concern should GM put a 4.7 liter v8 in there instead of the 5.5 liter discussed here..

Never been a fan of performance car motors from GM that were smaller than a minimum of 5 liters...

some great ones...but tend to better when they are over 300 cubic inches..

At least for corvettes anyways....

GM should put a supercharger on it and it will smoke the competition. No one will care how many liters it has. Could have direct injection and a sequential trans too JB devilsmile

with the sales on it the 13K range we will be lucky if the corvette survives. i don't think GM can afford to do a C-7 with this kinds of sales.

ummm....

Loks like a C6 with TransAM nose and C3 fenders. I'll pass.

A bit better, but now it's a C6 with Ferarri nose, Audi DRL's, and a Jaguar rear.

If those are my choices, I think I'd get a loaded Grand Sport C6 during the final year of production laugh

I like the hidden headlights on the orange one. But the yellow one does look like a Ferrari custom. At least they're not talkin V6!

I'm partial to the yellow one, but would like it more with pop up, or clam shell, headlights.

I sure hope chevy doesn't screw this up, the orange looks a little to retro for me. The yellow is definitely a little Euro influenced, but that might not be a bad thing.
