What led you to that original diagnosis?
Any codes?
Did you check the wiring to the starter to make sure it is on tight and no acid damage?

I was out of town with no tools, so I had to take it to a garage. They diagnosed it as the starter interlock relay. Once the car was started in the morning, it usually started with no problems after that all day, but when allowed to sit overnight, it resurfaced in the morning. Got it replaced when I got home, by a shop I trust, and it disappeared for about 31/2 to 4 years. Now it seems to be back.
