Hi Guys,
As some of you may have noticed, I haven't been around much of late. At the beginning of the year my Mom was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She started chemo last month and has been responding really well so far. Hopefully, that will continue for a long while. Obviously, taking her to doctors, tests, and treatments has been taking a lot of my time. While that will continue, I hope to pop in here more often.
Bruce

Bruce, good for you for taking care of your Mom. I had my Mom live with us for 5 years until the demencia got so bad, I had to move her to a nursing home where she got round the clock help. When we were kids, our Mom took care of us, now it's time to reciprocate. Best of luck to your Mom. We miss you here. Stay in touch from time to time and let us know how she is doing. Ken

I spent a looooong weekend with my Mom a few weeks ago. She has an amazing ability to push my buttons (probably payback for my teenage years), but I sure will miss her when she's gone.

Even if you're together for unpleasant reasons, take advantage of the time you spend with her while you can.

Thanks for everything guys. I went through something similar with my Dad (heart condition) a few years ago. It's tough to do once. It sucks having to do it again.

Unfortunately, no matter how good things are, there is little chance she'll be in remission, let alone cured. Hopefully it will be a long battle. One she is winning right now. And doing better than the doctors expected. The doctors readily admit they really don't know how well she'll respond or how long to the chemo. Just take it one day, week, month at a time.

Thanks for checking up. The chemo has knocked back the cancer pretty significantly.

Unfortunately, the side effects are becoming a big issue. She had a few days where she experienced dizziness. She just went for hearing tests and it shows that the chemo has affected the nerves to her ear. According to the oncologist, they may have to stop part of the chemo because of it. She currently gets 3 drugs, one of which is known to cause this side effect. Of course, there's no way to tell which drug is most effective against her cancer. I'll know more next week.

Thanks for all the concern and well wishes.

The cancer remains stable. That's about as good as it gets. The main tumor has shrunk and the cancer never truly disappears in this case.

They changed the chemo regimen about a month ago. She was getting 3 chemo drugs. They dropped Cisplatin as they don't like having people on it for more than 6 months because of the side effects. That was becoming a big issue as it affects the nerves, taste, etc. In that respect, by dropping this, she has notices some improvement in those areas.

The Corvette is my only car. All this running around means I'm driving it more than usual. The only downside is I don't have as much time to work on and maintain it as much as I'd like.

Thanks again for your wishes, prayers and concern. Since it's been a while and I've gotten a couple of PMs about it, here's an update.

My Mom continues to do very well. The CT scan continues to show that everything is stable.

They have discontinued the 2nd chemo drug about 6 weeks ago. And just lowered the dosage of the 3rd and final chemo drug in the original mix. They've done this because the side effects become an issue. Specifically, my Mom's thumb and first few fingers become hot, swollen and painful a few days after the chemo cycle starts. To the point where holding a sandwich hurt.

While it may sound bad, she's actually gone past 1 year in treatment. And has tolerated the chemo better than most people. Her hair has been growing back. And her taste buds returned. Hopefully this progress will continue for a long time. smile

Definitely good news

I have an aunt who found a lump in her neck a few years ago. She had it removed and went through chemo and radiation for a while. I don't have all of the details, but she's no longer getting treatment and I believe she's been declared cancer free. Sometimes there is a happy ending.

Hey Guys. Wow I can't believe it's been almost a year since I updated this post.

Unfortunately, this time it isn't great news. My Mom had been doing really well up until mid-January. There were signs the cancer was coming back, so they changed chemo regimens. Unfortunately, she wasn't tolerating it well. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. So, after two cycles, she was losing fluids and unable to eat much.

As a result, she ended up in the hospital a couple of weeks ago for dehydration. After getting fluids for a few days she was strong enough and go home, work, clean the house, climb the stairs, etc. Then her back went out. She was in a lot of pain and I started to take her to physical therapy. But, again, she wasn't eating and drinking. So, she had to go back in the hospital. She's been getting weaker over the past few days. So far, they have no idea why other than the possibility that the cancer has gotten worse inside her stomach. The CTs don't show that well enough for them to know. And just as I started typing this the Dr. called to say she was being moved to the ICU as they did a MRI of her head and that showed a very small sub-dura hematoma. She was on a blood thinner which may have been the cause as well as I think she banged her head into a cabinet door a few weeks ago.

I'm hoping and praying she'll recover from all of this. But, even if she does, I'm not sure if she'll be able to tolerate more of the chemotherapy. She's led a very busy life and if she can't keep that up, I'm not sure she'll want to keep fighting.

We only get one Mother. What they do for us is impossible to repay. I lost my Mother and it was a terrible time for me. Got relief when I realized she is only a thought away.
You are lucky to have had this much time with her. She is lucky to have such a loving son. All of us are with you in this very tough time and hope and pray that all goes well.
Thank you for all you put into this forum. Joe

Well, it turns out that the majority of the subdural hematoma was actually fluid collecting as a result of cancer cells getting into her brain. There's no specific tumor, but the cells are producing the fluid that is pushing her brain to one side. They managed to remove most of the fluid. But, because my Mom's health has declined she wouldn't be able to tolerate the 2 weeks of radiation needed to deal with this, let alone the chemo needed to deal with the underlying stomach cancer. So, we are currently preparing to take her home for home hospice care. I'm going to move back to her house to help take care of her and supervise the 24hr care we will have to take care of her.

Thanks again for all of your concern and support.
